“‘Aguilares’ is a song that I wrote in response to the pain I felt regarding
the death of Father Rutilio Grande on March 12, 1977. He worked in a town named Aguilares, which is why the song has the same name. Rutilio’s work with the campesinos was unique and original; the town had a lot of creativity, both ecologically and communally, in trying to be faithful to the Gospel. For that reason, the song expresses the assassination of Rutilio, and portrays the community as slaves to the killing.
 
Within that pain, there is a song of hope that within the piece that says,
‘Very well...there will be a time where the sound of our song overcomes the roar of the cannons.’ Thus, there is a vision of the future although the pain is still very present. However, this acknowledgement is not just for the soldiers, but for the vast campesino social energy that inspired the communal spirit of Aguilares.”

“‘Aguilares’ es una canción que hice por el dolor que yo siento por la muerte de Rutilio Grande el 12 Marzo 1977. Trabajó en el pueblo de Aguilares; por eso, la canción lleva ese nombre. Su trabajo con los campesinos fue único y original; hubo mucha creatividad con su ecología y su comunidad; siempre trataba de ser un pueblo fiel del Evangelio. Por esta razón, la canción cuenta del asesinato de Rutilio, y retrata la comunidad como esclavos al asesinato.
 
En medio del dolor, hay una canción de esperanza que dice, “Bueno...llegará el momento en que la canción se impondrá sobre el rugir de cañones.” Entonces, hay una visión del futuro aunque el dolor está muy presente. Pero es un reconocimiento, no solamente para los militares, sino para toda una gran cantidad de fuerza social campesino que inspiró al espíritu comunal de Aguilares.”
